Eine Filmkritik von Sonja Hartl Der Wert der Freundlichkeit Es ist ein nahezu idyllisches Bild: Clara (Zoe Kazan) liegt mit ihrem Mann im Ehebett, das Licht fällt leicht durch das Fenster. Er hat den Arm um sie gelegt, man sieht den Ehering. Doch schon bei dem ersten Blick in ihr Gesicht ahnt man, dass etwas an dieser friedlichen Idylle nicht stimmt. Leise steht Clara auf, weckt ihre Söhne Anthony (Jack Fulton) und Jude (Finlay Wojtak-Hissong) mit den Worten, dass es los gehe. Sie schleichen sich aus dem Haus, man hört ein Auto davonfahren – und sie landen in New York. Um Urlaub zu machen, sagt Clara. Aber etwas an ihrem Gesicht sagt, dass sie nicht vorhat, zurückzukehren und allen Mut zusammen genommen hat für diesen Schritt. In New York ist auch Mark (Tahar Rahim). Mit seinem Anwalt John Peter (Jay Baruchel) sitzt er in einem russischen Restaurant, das dem exzentrischen Timofey (Bill Nighy) gehört – und als er die Rechnung bezahlen will, lernt er dessen Geldgeber kennen. Im Gegensatz zu Timofey versteht Mark etwas von dem Geschäft und bekommt den Job, das Restaurant fortan zu führen. Außerdem begleitet er John Peter zu dessen „Vergebungsgruppe“, die von der Krankenschwester Alice (Andrea Riseborough) geleitet wird. Und dann gibt es noch Jeff (Caleb Landry Jones), der einen Job nach dem anderen verliert – und schließlich in einer Suppenküche landet, in der Alice ebenfalls hilft. Sie sind die Fremden, die in The Kindness of Strangers von Lone Scherfig im Titel stecken – alle lose miteinander verbunden, leben sie in New York und sind im Grunde genommen nette Menschen. Nach und nach begegnen sie einander. Und es sind dann auch diese Fremden, von denen nicht nur Clara Hilfe bekommt, nachdem ihr Schwiegervater (David Dencik) sie abgewiesen hat und sie schließlich nach einiger Zeit auf der Straße gelandet ist. Es sind viele kleine Episoden, die Lone Scherfig hier erzählt – vor allem aber geht es um Clara und ihre Söhne. Es wird schnell klar, dass der Ehemann und Vater gewalttätig ist, jedoch konzentriert sich der Film hier auf die Folgen dieser Gewalt und auf deren Auswirkung. Ein Vorfall wird erzählt, einmal erwähnt Clara, dass auch sie misshandelt wurde – aber als Anthony einmal eine genauere Schilderung gibt, ist sie nicht zu hören. Damit wird nicht dem Täter und der Tat Vorrang eingeräumt, sondern den Folgen für Clara und ihre Kinder. Ihre Furcht vor dem Vater ist stets zu greifen. Als er sie in einer Szene plötzlich aufspürt, verändert sich spürbar die Stimmung. Die Beklemmung, die Angst von Clara und ihren Söhnen überträgt sich körperlich in den Kinosaal, sofern man auch nur einen Funken Empathie in sich trägt. Es ist dieser Handlungsstrang, der in The Kindness of Strangers am meisten überzeugt – großartig getragen von Zoe Kazan. Es ist auch ihm zu verdanken, dass man manche der Gags allein schon als willkommene kurze Erleichterung begrüßt, andere Pointen sind indes sehr scharf und gekonnt gesetzt. Dazu kommt eine überzeugende Kameraarbeit, die die bisweilen allzu penetrante Musik weitgehend vergessen lässt. Dabei findet Sebastian Blenkov Bilder von New York, die gleichermaßen die Intimität und die Größe dieser Stadt fassen, aber auch erkennen lassen, dass es hier nur die Hilfe vom Fremden gibt, wenn man im Elend angekommen ist. Leider wird zum Ende hin die grundlegende Botschaft, dass man doch einfach freundlicher zueinander sein sollte, allzu penetrant wiederholt und einmal sogar ausgesprochen. Das ist schade, gerade bei einem Film, der so wundervolle Bilder für die Einsamkeit findet – insbesondere von Alice, die von Andrea Riseborough mit so viel Stärke und Kühle gespielt wird. Hier hätte sich Lone Scherfig, die ja auch das Drehbuch geschrieben hat, noch mehr auf die Stärke ihrer Inszenierung verlassen können. Lone Scherfigs neuer Film erzählt von vier Menschen in New York, die allesamt die schwerste Krise ihres Lebens durchleiden und die nichts weiter versuchen, den eisigen Winter in der Stadt zu überleben. Der Film wird die Berlinale 2019 eröffnen.

Similarly, we can stage a seduction or mount a courtship, but the result is more likely to be infatuation, or two illusions dancing together, than love. Love is bigger than you are. You can invite love, but you cannot dictate how, when, and where love expresses itself. You can choose to surrender to love or not, but in the end, love strikes like lightning: unpredictable and irrefutable. You can even find yourself loving people you don't like at all. Love does not come with conditions, stipulations, addenda, or codes. Like the sun, love radiates independently of our fears and desires. Love is inherently free. It cannot be bought, sold, or traded. You cannot make someone love you, nor can you prevent it — not for any amount of money. Love cannot be imprisoned, nor can it be legislated. Love is not a substance, not a commodity, not even a marketable power source. Love has no territory, no borders, no quantifiable mass or energy output. One can buy sex partners and even marriage partners. Marriage is a matter for the law, for rules and courts and property rights. In the past, the marriage price, or dowry, and in the present, alimony and the pre-nuptial agreement, make it clear that marriage is all about contracts. But as we all know, marriages, whether arranged or not, may have little to do with love. Sexual stimulation and gratification, whether by way of fingers, mouths, objects, fantasy play, whips and chains, or just plain intercourse, can certainly be bought and sold, not to mention used to sell other things. Whether sex should be for sale is another question entirely, but love itself cannot be sold. One can buy loyalty, companionship, attention, and perhaps even compassion, but love itself cannot be bought. An orgasm can be bought, but love cannot. It comes, or not, by grace, of its own will and in its own timing, subject to no human's planning. Love cannot be turned on as a reward. It cannot be turned off as a punishment. Only something else pretending to be love can be used as a lure, as a hook, for bait and switch, imitated, insinuated, but the real deal can never be delivered if it doesn't spring freely from the heart. This doesn't mean that love allows destructive and abusive behaviors to go unchecked. Love speaks out for justice and protests when harm is being done. Love points out the consequences of hurting oneself or others. Love allows room for anger, grief, or pain to be expressed and released. But love does not threaten to withhold itself if it doesn't get what it wants. Love does not say, directly or indirectly, "If you are a bad boy, Mommy won't love you any more. " Love does not say, "Daddy's little girl doesn't do that. " Love does not say, "If you want to be loved, you must be nice, " or "Do what I want, " or "Never love anyone else, " or "Promise you'll never leave me. " Love cares what becomes of you, because love knows that we are all interconnected. Love is inherently compassionate and empathic. Love knows that the "other" is also oneself. This is the true nature of love, and love itself cannot be manipulated or restrained. Love honors the sovereignty of each soul. Love is its own law.
